Annie & I Take Altamont!
The first time I saw the small town of Altamont, Illinois was this past June at the John Deere G reunion. I was taken with the lovely mansion I saw there. We also loved the fun antique shop the hubby and I stopped at. I saw that they were having a music and wine fair at the Charles Wright House Museum. I thought perfect! A trip for Annie! About once a month or so, my friend Annie Jansen and I…

Jackson Hotel (405 Jackson) and Cove Hotel (400 Jackson), previously known as Carver House, wear each listed in 1960s editions of The Negro Travelers' Green Book.
In the mid 60s Charles and Cornelia Kellar operated the Jackson and Carver. Charles, an attorney, was sent to Nevada by Thurgood Marshall, then an NAACP officer, as part of an effort to "make sure there were black attorneys in every state." In '60 he was the first African-American to pass the Nevada State Bar exam.

Biólogos do Neodarwinismo
THEODOSIUS DOBZHANSKY
STEBBINS

in the spirit of @keepthisholykiss ‘s post ranking the homoeroticism of Hamlet Graveyard Scene paintings
here is my ranking of the
Hamlet Illustrations I’ve Found on Google
that i personally think posess the most homoeroticism and/or gender between hamlet and horatio
first up at no. 8 we have this one by Adam Vogler; it’s a classic pose, pretty gay; the automatic hand Horatio has on Hamlet’s arm? the determined look towards the ghost? lovely. decent helping of gender as well since for some reason he drew both hamlet and horatio to look like a young orlando bloom.
Tumblr media
Next at #7 is this one by Gordon Browne. I LOVE Browne’s Shakespeare illustrations; his stuff is so evocative and he’s drawn some of my favorite Romeo and Juliet illustrations to date. This graveyard scene is subtle but wonderfully gay; look at them leaning into each other! Hamlet’s arm resting on Horatio’s shoulder so that his cloak covers them both slightly! delightful.
Tumblr media
#6 is a classic! This drawing by Robert Thew is very well-known, and why wouldn’t it be! Such a fun style! Such a spooky ghost! The movement is so intense! And the Horatio is so in love with Hamlet! Just LOOK at how he’s holding onto him. The terrified concern?? It’s wonderful.
Tumblr media
5: Now for some absolute GENDER! These are both by John Masey Wright, and frankly I’m obsessed. I love when people draw Horatio so he looks almost like Hamlet but in color. Also, of course, who could ignore how feminine they both look here? [how did he draw these characters so androgynous when he drew Romeo to look like he was 45 years old? it’s a mystery.] Love this though 10/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eugene Delacroix was famously wild about Hamlet, he drew like 10 bajillion sketches, paintings, engravings, etc. to illustrate it. This is my personal favorites of the ones he drew featuring Horatio, because it makes me DEATHLY sad. This drawing of Hamlet’s death is at #4 because look at it.
Tumblr media
For no. 3 we have Victor Müller’s painting of Hamlet and Horatio in the graveyard, which is heartrending and sombre with a heavy helping of gentle pining. It’s all in how Horatio is looking at Hamlet; he looks so heartbroken to see how tired and sad Hamlet looks. Crushes my heart into a million pieces. 20000/10.
Tumblr media
W. G. Simmonds gets #2 purely for going to the trouble to draw the “thou art e’en such a man (etc.)” scene at all. Who DOES that? Why would you? Look at the way they’re LOOKING at each other! Look at their hands!! I’m supposed to just act normal about this???
Tumblr media
Charles Taylor did engravings based on some drawings by Robert Smirke for an illustrated edition of Shakespeare in the year of our lord 1783 and frankly how dare he. what can I even say about these?? oh my god. the gender of it all. the PINING of it all. The death one in particular could make me cry. Number one in MY heart of hearts.

Thoughts on the oscar noms? (…and the current drama surrounding it)
Honestly, I need people to realize that Barbie was a cute movie that was ultimately meant to sell Barbie dolls. It had a great set design, really cool visuals and costumes, some fun jokes, and a very good performance from Ryan Gosling. I think Greta being snubbed is weird because the movie was very CLEARLY. DIRECTED. But then again, Wes Anderson does that a lot to mixed results with the Academy, so. A very clear and strong eye does not always please them. If we're gonna talk about women (because apparently the Oscars allow only one lady director) who directed films very smartly, I would say that Celine Song is a better choice. Past Lives was such a good movie, and I think her direction really helped communicate a story in which a lot was left unsaid, pairing well with the actors.
And I'll be real... I need people to get that the movie was always more about Ken. Ken had the best script. Ken had the best arc. Is that right, for a Barbie movie? I don't know, dude. But I frankly don't blame the Academy for nominating Ryan and not Margot, because Margot had nothing great to do and she didn't elevate the material. She was good, she was charming. Ryan was performing a lot more. I like America btw, but I don't get that nom lol.
Also, stop complaining about I'm Just Ken, it was great, let us have fun song nominees.
Best Picture: I don't know why Barbie is there, the Oppenheimer sweep has been boring and though I liked the movie, as a film it was absolutely nothing without Cillian and to me that does not a Best Picture make, Killers of the Flower Moon or American Fiction should win but won't, Maestro is a joke, Past Lives deserves but also deserves more noms, haven't seen Poor Things, Anatomy of a Fall, or Zone of Interest (though at least filmtwt can stop complaining about it not being well-marketed for the Academy) yet. I liked The Holdovers, but that was before I found out the director is uhhhhh a very very bad man.
Best Actor: Leo was snubbed and I do think him campaigning for Lily so hard had something to do with it but that was legit one of his most interesting, un-Leo performances; Bradley is a joke; happy for Colman but haven't seen Rustin yet; Cillian should win and I think he will but Paul G could dark horse it--I don't think his performance was Oscar-worthy but he was good and he's been picking up his fair share of awards; Jeffrey Wright was amazing in American Fiction and if anyone should dark horse it it's him. I'd still give it to Cillian. If this was up to me, I'd toss out Bradley and throw in Teo Yoo, who was so so good in Past Lives. But the Academy is sending a HARD backlash message to Asian creatives after the EEAAO sweep, imo.
Best Actress: As I said, I don't care that Margot wasn't nominated and I don't think she should've been, and imo her best performance was easily I, Tonya; I haven't seen Nyad so no comment on Annette, same with Sandra for Anatomy, and I think Carey had moments in Maestro but she overall was not one of those "standouts in a horrible movie" actors; Lily should win and absolutely killed her performance and dominated her movie, but I am worried that Emma could take it. I'd toss out Carey for Greta Lee.
Best Supporting Actor: Everyone needs to stop saying Sterling snuck in because he was deeply moving in American Fiction and is lowkey highkey one of the best actors working right now; RDJ basically just did Leslie Odom Jr. in Hamilton and F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus but with his RDJ cadence of speaking he can't drop to save his life, but he's taking this for a career Oscar; I hate that Charles isn't there, but if it wasn't him I'd give it to Sterling or De Niro, who gave one of my favorite performances in his career and was SO disgusting and menacing in Killers. Haven't seen Ruffalo, so if it was up to me depending on his performance I'd toss out RDJ for Charles Melton and possibly shuffle some other people around.
Best Supporting Actress: Lol Emily was horrible in Oppenheimer and I'll die on that hill, generally liking her as an actress; Da'Vine will win this and she was amazing in The Holdovers but the director really sours it for me; happy for Danielle, haven't seen TCP; America shouldn't be there but whatever; I literally though Nyad was about a mythological creature until I Googled last night and found out it was about a swimmer.
Best Director: This is going to go to Christopher Nolan for one of his better movies but not his best because that is FAR. AND AWAY. THE PRESTIGE. Should go to Scorsese, his direction for Killers is why (to me) that movie still felt like it was moving at a clip despite the length.

"M'CAFFREY TO MISS BIG PARADE THIS YEAR," Toronto Star. July 11, 1933. Page 2. ---- "Never Missed Twelfth," Pleads Pat's Friend-Gets Three Months ---- "He's never missed a parade, your worship," Captain Bunton of the Salvation Army pleaded for Patrick McCaffrey, charged with drinking. "I haven't been here for a long time." Pat put in for himself.
"He always has some story or other," said Magistrate Coatsworth. "He's been up three times in the last two or three months, hasn't he?" "Yes," confirmed Inspector Guthrie.
"Well, it will have to be three months. He will have to miss the parade this year."
John Reeve, another repeater, was also sent down for three months.
"First offence," said the clerk as Jas. Crane was called.
"It may be the first offence, but it's not the only offence. I got information this morning that he did a good deal of damage to his wife's house. He was out all night long, crashing things. I'm going to give him $20 or 30 days," said the bench.
"These men weren't on the tracks at all," declared Tom O'Connor, counsel for Wilfred Holmes, John Lemon, Edward Ridmon and Chas. Cameron, who were all charged by the C.P.R. officer with trespass on the Parkdale line. "They all tell me they were sitting beneath the trees on Noble St." The magistrate remanded them. Thomas Doyle, arrested by the same C.P.R. officer on a charge of trespass was sent down for five days.
"This man had a serious operation last November. Since then he's had six other operations. If this case is dismissed, he won't ever do it again," promised Austin Ross for Wm. G. Wright, charged with keeping a common betting house. "$150 fine and costs," said his worship.
Faulty Memory George Johnson, charged with breaking into a cigar-store on Carlton St., was remanded one week for mental examination. He claimed to have developed a case of loss of memory.
"I don't know anything about it. My head was all dazed," the prisoner said when he was asked to plead guilty or not guilty.
Alec Kelly, who apprehended Johnson with the help of Tom Jephson, stated he was walking down Parliament St. early yesterday morning when he heard a crash of glass. He went over and seized the man, Kelly stated.
"Did you find anything on the man?" asked Assistant Crown Attorney Fred Malone. "Just these cigarette dummies."
"He made a pretty bad choice," Mr. Malone commented.
Jephson testified that Johnson had told him that some drunk had broken the window and run around the corner.
"You don't know anything about being thrown out of a restaurant "earlier in the evening?" asked the crown. "I don't know anything about it."
Mr. Malone said the citizens should be commended to the police commision.
"They certainly should." agreed the magistrate. "I will mention it to the chief." Peter Lawsen, Ernest Twiddy, and Bob Telfer were given the option of $10 or five days for stealing a ride.
"I'm going to plead guilty for Tomlimnson. Cannell wants to plead not guilty," declared T. B. Horkins, defending Fred Cannell and Charles Tomlinson, charged with stealing two suits from a downtown store.
"I saw these two men, hanging around the exchange office," testified the store detective. "Then they got two suits from the stock room. I went up to them then, and took them to the office. When Tomlinson was searched a suit was found on him. I saw Canneil drop his on the way."
Both were remanded to July 25. Bail stands at $1,000.
McBrady Remanded Three charges of theft have been lodged against Louis V. McBrady. Only one of the charges came up to-day It was deferred to June 13, when the other charges are to be heard.
"If your worship has no objections, I would like to be tried by some other magistrate, because of what's happened in the past," the prisoner requested.
"I'm quite agreeable," his worship replied, but I can't guarantee that Mr. Jones will accept the responsibility."
"He says that he wants to get out on his own bail," Mr. Malone told the bench.
. "I've been in jail since June 30 for the theft of $5," added Mr. McBrady. "I can't accept your own bail, I'm afraid. There's too much of sort of thing." Magistrate Coatsworth refused.
Woman Driver Theresa Klein, charged with reckless driving, was given a two weeks' remand by Magistrate Jones in liquor and traffic court. Bail of $200 was continued.
Charged with Illegal possession of liquor, Walter Zabolotny drew a fine of $25 and costs with the option of a month in jail.
Wm. Wilson pleaded guilty to driving his car recklessly on Bloor St west of Keele. He collided with a milk wagon.
Wilson was sentenced to $10 and costs or 10 days and 7 days.
"He was under the influence of liquor," said P.C. Locke, testifying against Louis Dollery, charged with reckless driving on Richmond St. W.
Admitting he had a glass of beer. accused explained his groggy conduct and appearance shortly after the accident by the fact that his jaw was injured in the collision so that his teeth had to be removed later.
"Ten dollars and costs or ten days and seven days," said his worship.
"I thought I remanded you until Sept. 5." said Magistrate Jones as Louis Garland appeared in court.
"This is another charge," explained special Crown Prosecutor Marshall.
"There was also an Indian in the party," he continued, "and in a back room I found a woman so drunk she could not be aroused."
The officer declared that there had been a canned heat orgy in the house.
